8 Iraqis killed by US troops in west of Kirkuk

Eight Iraqis were killed yesterday and 12 wounded in an exchange of gunfire with US troops during a demonstration west of here to protest US attacks on the hotbed town of Fallujah, police and medicssaid.

Awad Khalaf al-Juburi, police chief in Hawija, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of this northern Iraqi city, said there had been a demonstration by some 1,500 people to denounce what they called the massacres committed by the American army in Fallujah.

At the end of it, "some of them started firing at the American soldiers, who fired back, killing eight people, including a child, and wounded 12 others."

US marines were locked in fierce fighting Wednesday with Sunni insurgents in Fallujah, west of Baghdad, as part of "Operation Vigilant Resolve" aimed atflushing out insurgents who killed four American contractors there last week.
