British teenager in court over alleged bomb plot

A 17-year-old, who was one of nine people arrested in British police raids last week which apparently foiled a bomb plot, was remanded in custody yesterday after appearing in court.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with conspiracy to cause an explosion.

"You unlawfully and maliciously conspired with others to cause, by an explosive substance, an explosion of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property," said the charge read to him at Bow Street magistrates court in central London.

The teenager, unshaven and dressed in a black sweatshirt and black jogging trousers, simply replied, "yes" when asked if he understood the charges.
