Highly embarrassing mugging incidents
It seems everything has become a fair game for the thugs. Even a lady ambassador has fallen victim to outright roguery, let alone the Australian High Commission staff. The criminals are pushing newer borders, moving into places and predating on people one would have thought were immune to such things because of their station of life and owing to the fact that they lived in more protected areas than much of the rest of the city. That the barriers are breaking down may be put down to (a) a slack developing in police vigil in areas thought to have been conventionally well-protected to yield an impression that these were safe zones after all; and (b) the exploratory nature of the criminal mindset which when obstructed in certain trodden fields tends to erupt in other areas.
All this is extremely unfortunate when an impression appears to have gained ground that Rab operations have struck fear in the minds of hardened criminals and the government vociferously claims that the Rab has been an unqualified success.
Whatever happened in the diplomatic zone on Wednesday must be taken seriously for the obvious reason that it has to do with the perception of our law and order management image. It will be worth probing whether it was all motivated, organised and preplanned, but one thing is certain which is that recurrence of such incidents are stoppable provided the police put their shoulders to the wheel.
