Double murder at Baridhara

Apartment security under spotlight
It was one of the most horrific and gruesome murders in recent time. We were simply dumbfounded at the news that the headmistress of a reputed city high school and her daughter were butchered at their own apartment in Baridhara last Friday. Even though there had been some killings in apartments or rooming houses in the past, the latest one couldn't have been grislier. We express our profound sympathies and condolences to the surviving members of the bereaved families.

The incident cannot but raise the question as to how good the security arrangements at the apartment blocks that abound in the city are. If such a brutal murder could take place in an affluent, and supposedly, well-protected area, we wonder what poor state of vulnerability folks living in other areas must be in? How easy it was for those four young men to get into the apartment and leave at their will without raising any suspicion around. The whole incident sounds so bizarre that it's difficult to comprehend that it actually happened! Given the circumstantial evidence and some background information available, one sees hardly any reason why the killers can't be tracked down soon and brought to justice speedily.

The incident takes place at a time when the government is claiming to have curbed crime with the help of Rab and increased number of law enforcers patrolling the city. Questions were raised in the past over the integrity, skill and efficiency of the private company recruited security guards who are hired by the housing complex owners. The horrific double murder at Baridhara has brought the issue under the spotlight again. Do we really know the background of these guards? Are they given proper training for such an important duty? What are the criteria for recruitment of these guards and what checking and surveillance procedures are followed by them?

The government have been talking about drawing up policies for private security companies whose services are in high demand in the sprawling metropolis with more and more high-rise buildings coming up with each passing day. Let's have a uniform set of rules to govern the working of security guards across the board.
