JCD leaders arrested for mugging

Time to weed out such elements
The news that the police arrested three leaders of the ruling party front organisation JCD for mugging pedestrians in the Central Shaheed Minar area of Dhaka University on Monday night is as saddening as it is unsurprising. That student leaders would indulge in such anti-social activities so openly and with such disregard for the law and common decency should be shocking, but in the context of campus life at present is only too predictable.

This is not the first time that hooligans associated with the ruling party have been apprehended for these kinds of crimes and it speaks poorly of the party that elements such as these have been tolerated for so long. The JCD has since cancelled the primary membership of the three, and this is to be commended, but the question remains why elements such as these were accepted into the party in the first place, and whether any move would have been made to curb their crimes or to discipline them had the police not taken action.

This latest incident is another salutary reminder to the ruling party that now is as good a time as any for it to take corrective action against the criminal elements who are associated with it. These elements are tarnishing the image of the party as a whole and concerted efforts to root them out and bring them to book would do wonders to raise the image of the party in the eyes of the public.

In addition, the time is long overdue to clear out gangsters and criminals from the campus. Criminals such as the three muggers have long dominated the campuses, marring the university life for serious students, and there can be few endeavours more worthy of the administration's attention than for the campus to be cleared of all anti-social trouble-makers.

Finally, a word of congratulations to the law enforcement authorities who had the fortitude to arrest the three miscreants despite their political connections. Such gutsy and conscientious police work is just what we need from them.
