Maiden Test victory

More the merrier
It's great going! The boys have made history in a way that brought immense pleasure to millions of cricket fans in the country. The first-ever Test match win is truly an occasion to celebrate. They have defeated Zimbabwe by a huge margin of 226 runs. There could not have been a better way of letting the cricket world know that Bangladesh has come out of the victory drought.

We have achieved the dream victory in our 35th outing, which is better than New Zealand's record of making it in their 45th appearance. Against the backdrop of poor showing by Bangladesh, murmurs were afloat whether the 'minnows' of world cricket had not been accorded Test status prematurely. This should be put to rest now.

We believe the victory against the formidable Indians in the second ODI had a magical effect on the team as a whole. The boys suddenly felt that they were capable of beating strong teams. They needed to apply themselves, concentrate better and bring their killer instinct into full play. Their batting was very good in the first innings in Chittagong as the top order clicked after a long time. There were some excellent individual performances. The captain showed the way with two half centuries and others followed him with a sense of responsibility.

Our bowlers deserve a big hand. The role of the bowlers is believed to be crucial in a Test match and they performed the job with great commitment and deadly accuracy. True, the young Zimbabweans lack experience, but there is no dearth of talent in the side.

The year 2005 has begun on a vibrant note for our cricket. We hope the boys will be able to keep it up in the days ahead. We congratulate the cricketers, coach Dave Whatmore and all those whose efforts went into the making of history.
