HUST students protest attack by outsiders
Campus sources said the power-hungry students laid a siege to Palli Bidyut Samity-1 Office and put up barricades on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway demanding power supply.
Hearing the news, Registrar Abdul Majid and President of the Teachers' Association Hasan Fuad Eltaj along with some outsiders went to the spot at about 9:00pm and hurled abuses at the students.
The situation turned worse when some students were allegedly assaulted by the outsiders and some employees of the university, the sources said.
"The agitating students then confined the VC and the registrar in their offices, ransacked rooms of academic and administrative buildings and set ablaze a farm on the campus," said an official of the university.
On information, police led by the additional SP and a first class magistrate went to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Sources said the honours final examinations are scheduled to begin on May 25. But, frequent load-shedding ahead of the exams made the students angry.
