Elephants in the Fog

Dhaka at the Palais / Addressing the ‘Elephant in the Fog’ and how we treat our ‘others’

1 hour(s) ago
“Elephants in the Fog” serves as a testament to how Nepal’s legal fight has historically leaned toward a broader human rights framework, granting an "others" category on citizenship documents based on self-identification.

Dhaka at the Palais / Cate Blanchett’s DFF, its Bangladesh connection, and a fleeting opportunity

19 May 2026, 12:26 PM
When I walked into the Salle de Conférence de Presse for the Displaced Filmmakers Fund (DFF), admittedly a bit late after a screening, one thing instantly came to mind: Rithy Panh, Annemarie Jacir, Mohammed Amer, Akuol de Mabior, and Bao Nguyen are incredibly talented directors of the highest calibre. However, I wondered whether the fund could also be used to amplify voices that would otherwise have no way of being heard. I will circle back to this point.

‘There can be no explanation for this genocide’: Javier Bardem addresses blacklist rumours at Cannes

17 May 2026, 16:02 PM
Bardem’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival has remained one of the festival’s most closely watched moments. By addressing political tensions directly during the press conference for “My Beloved”, the actor shifted attention beyond cinema toward the ethical responsibilities of public figures and artistes.

Tribute / She was the best of us

However, humor was not all she was—she was also the kindest and most giving person you could meet. She was the type who would send you voice messages to praise and encourage you, even if you had just met. If she perceived you to be talented in any way, she would go above and beyond to encourage you to pursue your craft.

Walking into a “Cyberpunk 2077”-themed café in Bassbaba Sumon’s residence, it was clear that the SEA legend had ventured into another passion after checking every bucket list item possible for a musician. He started his career in his teens, becoming a cultural icon while revolutionising how the bass, as an instrument, is perceived in Bangladesh, and later collaborating with international musicians like Frank Gambale, Bob Franceschini, and Bubby Lewis.

Mahamuda Aktar Monisha with her short film "Gali Kothon" at Cannes

Dhaka at the Palais / Cannes, but not quite: Underdog ‘Gaali Kothon’ cuts top 4 on another stage

15 May 2026, 22:57 PM
However, I decided instead to walk down the street from the Palais, with a gimbal in one hand and a coffee in the other, straight to Eden Hôtel, where the French Riviera Film Festival is taking place. Here, “Gali Kothon: A tale of swear words”, a short film by Mahamuda Aktar Monisha, is vying for the top documentary prize.

Four Bangladeshi hopefuls fighting for their films in Cannes

These four directors aren’t here to walk the carpet; they are here to fight for the survival of their stories.

A life lesson guised as a jury board

But what hit like a sledgehammer was Irish screenwriter Paul Laverty breaking the festival bubble to slam the "blacklisting" of actors for their political stances—particularly regarding the bombing of women and children in Gaza—even if he did not explicitly name the conflict in every sentence. “Shame on those who bomb women and children. Shame on those who blacklist actors like Javier Bardem and Mark Ruffalo for speaking up against their misdeeds.”

Cannes Film Festival 2026

Bangladesh's absence from Cannes jarring after previous inroads

Last year, “Ali” showed that Bangladeshi cinema could earn recognition at Cannes. The challenge now is whether the country can build an industry presence strong enough to ensure that such successes become part of a sustained trajectory rather than isolated moments of celebration.

‘Cha Gorom’: A freshly brewed dose of Safa Kabir’s prowess

“Cha Gorom” doesn’t have a traditional romance. It’s not rife with action, suspense or drama – it almost completely relies on director Shankha Dasgupta’s layered storytelling and the charm of lead actress Safa Kabir. Despite that, the Chorki film has amassed quite the adoration of the audience.

‘Bhallagena’: Arnob’s new album is a triumph of cohesion and variety

‘Bhallagena’: Arnob’s new album is a triumph of cohesion and variety

“I promise that I won’t take another 10-year gap to release my next album!” jested Shayan Chowdhury Arnob, at the intimate launching ceremony of “Bhallagena” on October 27. This was his first solo album after “Doob”, which was released in 2015. A 10-year gap can be devastating to a musician, even someone of Arnob's stature—times change, styles become outdated, and industries move on. But this is Arnob we’re talking about—he helms Coke Studio Bangla, performs all over the world, and has relentlessly reinvented himself throughout the years, all while keeping his signature, quirky timelessness, which is also evident in “Bhallagena”.

My last conversation with AB

My last conversation with AB

As I was about to enter AB Kitchen, I was worried how the man would receive me after four long years of barely any contact. In 2014, I was a naïve teenager, who felt lucky to be included in a musical project with the great Ayub Bachchu – fascinated every time that my name would come out of his mouth.
