Unstoppable Sanjoy

27 July 2026
I had to make my way inside the headquarters of Qinetic Network to meet a special artiste. He had the world in the palm of his hands when he performed his song “SIIR SIIR” at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Canada, proudly showing off his maroon jacket—its sleeve intricately embroidered with the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Water Lily (Shapla).

Interview / I was thinking of my parents and grandparents: Sanjoy

14 June 2026
The world moves in a flash at 130 beats per minute. For months, the preparation for Sanjoy Deb was exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. Behind the private jets and celebratory vlogs that he posted, was immaculate planning and a mountain of expectations. When the bass dropped, he was standing at the center of the footballing world.

‘Fjord’ claims the Palme d’Or in a night of historic streaks

24 May 2026
In a stunning final move, the jury bypassed the media front-runners to award the 2026 Palme d’Or to Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu for “Fjord”.

‘Elephants in the Fog’ brings glory to Nepal, wins Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes

23 May 2026
Nepalese film "Elephants in the Fog" has won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, marking a landmark achievement for the country’s cinema on the global stage.

Dhaka at the Palais / A girl and her horse trudge through the Short Film Corner

22 May 2026
By the time the ‘happy hour’ sizzled down, I had talked to a dozen filmmakers from all over the world who were hoping to get their films onto the main stages of the upcoming Berlinale, TIFF, and Venice Film Festivals. Mithun, by that time, had unofficially confirmed that he had found a willing distributor. If that is true, Cannes served as the first proper documentation of this promising film.

Dhaka at the Palais / Addressing the ‘Elephants in the Fog’ and how we treat our ‘others’

20 May 2026
“Elephants in the Fog” serves as a testament to how Nepal’s legal fight has historically leaned toward a broader human rights framework, granting an "others" category on citizenship documents based on self-identification.

Dhaka at the Palais / Cate Blanchett’s DFF, its Bangladesh connection, and a fleeting opportunity

19 May 2026
When I walked into the Salle de Conférence de Presse for the Displaced Filmmakers Fund (DFF), admittedly a bit late after a screening, one thing instantly came to mind: Rithy Panh, Annemarie Jacir, Mohammed Amer, Akuol de Mabior, and Bao Nguyen are incredibly talented directors of the highest calibre. However, I wondered whether the fund could also be used to amplify voices that would otherwise have no way of being heard. I will circle back to this point.

‘There can be no explanation for this genocide’: Javier Bardem addresses blacklist rumours at Cannes

17 May 2026
Bardem’s appearance at the Cannes Film Festival has remained one of the festival’s most closely watched moments. By addressing political tensions directly during the press conference for “My Beloved”, the actor shifted attention beyond cinema toward the ethical responsibilities of public figures and artistes.

The next-gen divas of Dhallywood

No one in showbiz can hold their place forever – especially if you’re a leading lady. The showbiz industry can be ruthless to both veterans and newcomers, with the latter coming up from time to time, vying for their own space in the world of glam and glitz.

Coke Studio Bangla Concert: The night music won against pessimism

Let us address the elephant in the room first: Coke Studio Bangla is obviously an elaborate advert for Coca Cola. It does not take a genius to come to that conclusion, the enormous Coca Cola logo on top of the stage at Army Stadium yesterday should be enough of a ‘hint’. That being said, what the platform has done to re-ignite interest in our local scene is admirable, only exemplified by thousands of people showing up in droves in Bangladesh Army Stadium yesterday, despite an entire day of incessant rain.

Singer Pritom Hasan

How acting made Pritom Hasan a better musician

Both of the songs were conceptualized and executed by Team Pritom – a robust group of talented artistes that now act as the think-tank for Pritom Hasan’s unorthodox ideas. “A lot of questions will be answered in the last chapter,” says the singer.

Do we really need an Indian ‘Forrest Gump’ remake?

India’s history of remaking Hollywood films is shabby at best –the first offenders that come to mind are Jim Carrey’s fantastic performance in “Bruce Almighty” being turned into Salman Khan’s rancid “God Tussi Great Ho”, and the sheer audacity of using the premise of “The Italian Job” to make “Players”.

The Hybrid Experience: A showcase of community, brotherhood and mutual respect

In a line-up full of hard-hitters like Artcell, Black, Cryptic Fate, Arbovirus, Nemesis, AvoidRafa, Mechanix, and Dreek, the most memorable moment was Shakib Al Hasan gingerly singing “Amra Korbo Joy”, much to the elation of the crowd.

Coke Studio Bangla: Arnob, Boga Taleb deliver an unforgettable bhawaiya experience

As “Chiltey Roud” headed towards its majestic outro, pairing Boga Taleb’s resounding, celestial vocals with Shayan Chowdhury Arnob’s calming delivery – the shehnai playing in the background almost brought me to tears.

Reinterpreting Rabindra Sangeet to a new generation

Rabindra Sangeet exponent Sadi Mohammad was one of my father’s favourite singers -- so much so that when I was born, I became his namesake. Today is Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the Kabi Guru, and also the day that my father reminds me of my ‘origin story’.

Coke Studio Bangla: Latin and Nazrul’s harmonious entanglement

It is difficult to maintain even a semblance of neutrality when a song bewitches you from the second it starts playing – that is what Coke Studio Bangla’s newest release, “Bulbuli”, did to my ‘trained’ musical ear. On the first day of the Bengali New Year, the musical production paid a perfect homage to our National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Sainik fights on with his tunes

It was 1989 when T W Sainik first came from Nilphamari to Dhaka, as a culturally active young man. Even after two decades of successful work as a cinematographer – more than 500 tele-fictions, 40 TVCs and 4 films, we know the artiste as the voice behind “Tumi Amar Ghum”, a song that captured the hearts of music listeners regardless of taste.

'Film industry won't grow if we just sit and complain': Nuhash Humayun

Nuhash Humayun loves making “weird stuff’, as he jokingly phrases it. However, he is objectively one of the most open-to-experiment directors of our time.

Was the second serving of Coke as refreshing as the first?

Let us get this out of the way first: “Nasek Nasek” was so dynamic, energetic and well-executed musically, that it made it unusually difficult for any song to follow it up.

A generational talent graced Dhaka, what was our reaction?

It has always been difficult to please everyone, especially in the age of social media -- where everyone feels not only entitled to an opinion, but also entitled to share it regardless of how crude or unfiltered it may be.
