Street protests will not influence banking decisions: BB spokesperson

Star Business Report

Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesperson Arief Hossain Khan told journalists that no banking decision will be determined by street protests, stressing that the central bank will act strictly in accordance with the law and institutional interests, free from any form of pressure or emotion.

The BB spokesperson made the statement today regarding the Islami Bank issue.

He said that the central bank acknowledges individuals' right to demonstrate, express their views, and seek legal remedies if they feel aggrieved.

However, Khan said that all decisions would be made through established legal and regulatory processes.

Regarding the recent controversy over Islami Bank's board meeting, the central bank spokesperson said permission had been granted to hold the meeting virtually rather than in person due to concerns that misinformation circulating on social media could trigger disorderly situations.

While maintaining law and order outside bank premises falls under the responsibility of law enforcement agencies, the central bank said it places special importance on ensuring security within bank compounds and office premises.

The spokesperson's statement also underscored the governor's firm stance against political interference in both the central bank and commercial banks.

Bank officials have been encouraged to report any political pressure directly to the governor, who has pledged to personally address such issues if necessary.

Bangladesh Bank further warned against associating any bank with a particular political party, saying that such identification poses a serious threat to a bank's long-term sustainability.
