CUET 'shutdown' enters fifth day

Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) today continued their "complete shutdown" of the campus for the fifth consecutive day, demanding cancellation of the education ministry gazette appointing Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam as vice chancellor and reinstatement of Prof Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.

Teachers and staff members have also expressed solidarity with the protesters.

Campus sources said hundreds of students demonstrated at the Shaheed Minar area, showed red cards to the new VC and drew graffiti on CUET buildings.

Meanwhile, the CUET Teachers’ Association announced a full-scale work abstention after Prof Shariful, a teacher of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), joined CUET online on Thursday amid the demonstrations.

Prof Dr Mohammad Ahsan Ullah and Prof Dr Abul Hasan, the association’s president and general secretary respectively, announced the work-abstention programme through a press release on Friday night.

The students and teachers vowed to continue their peaceful protests until their demands are met.
