Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Sheikh Shariful Islam remains confined to his office since yesterday morning as teachers, officers, employees and students stand firm on their respective demands.

Demonstrating students locked the VC inside the administrative building around 12:30pm yesterday, demanding his resignation.

Two people confined inside the office with the vice-chancellor fell ill after spending the night without electricity.

A physician from the CUET Medical Centre, accompanied by journalists, visited the VC's office around 2:00am.

Sheikh Shariful Islam spoke to journalists and said he was in good health.

“Two of our alumni members are suffering from complications related to high blood pressure. So I called an ambulance and a doctor. As everyone here has been confined for a long time, they are feeling unwell and exhausted,” he said.

The journalists came out after about half an hour.

Meanwhile, an all-out non-cooperation movement and a complete work stoppage continued on the campus, with protesters demanding the removal of the VC and reinstatement of a former VC.

No buses carrying teachers left the campus this morning, while police remained deployed outside the university.

Tensions at CUET escalated on Sunday after demonstrating students locked the newly appointed VC inside the administrative building, demanding his resignation.

They also cut power and water supplies to the building. The move came on the 21st day of a campus-wide shutdown demanding the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Professor Dr Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.
