4 housewives murdered over dowry, family feud
Four housewives were murdered by their husbands and in-laws over 'dowry and family feud' in Rajbari, Chuadanga, Moulvibazar and Sirajganj districts yesterday and the day before, report our correspondents.
In Rajbari, a housewife was killed by her husband over dowry at Mozratkol village in Sadar upazila on Monday night. The deceased is Hena Begum, 22, wife of Sohel Sheikh of the village.
Police quoted victim's family as saying that they gave Sohel Tk 1 lakh as dowry during their marriage. Recently, Sohel asked Hena to bring Tk 1 lakh more from her parents, but she refused to do so, they added.
Neighbours said Sohel and Hena locked in an altercation over the matter at around 8:00pm on Monday. At one stage, Sohel strangled Hena, hung the body from a tree adjacent to their house to pass it off as suicide and went into hiding.
Police recovered the body yesterday and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Hena's father Taizul Ali filed a case with Sadar Police Station, accusing Sohel, Kamal Hossain, sub-inspector of the police station, said.
Away in Chuadanga, law enforcers yesterday arrested one Raham Ali of Gopinathpur village in Sadar upazila on Monday on charge of killing his wife.
Police said Raham killed his wife Aleya Begum, 43, by slitting her throat over family feud while she was asleep and fled the scene.
Deceased's son Chand Ali filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station, accusing his father the same day, Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station, said.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided the village around 11:30am and arrested Raham.
He was yesterday produced in a Chuadanga court that sent him to the jail, the OC added.
In Moulvibazar, a housewife was killed by her husband over a family feud at Sompasi village in Sadar upazila on Monday night.
Quoting neighbours, police said Helal Mia, 40, stabbed his wife Rozina Begum, 29, following a family feud around 9:30pm. Police later arrested Helal.
In Sirajganj, a housewife was strangled by her in-laws over a family feud at Majhgram in Enayetpur upazila of Sirajganj district yesterday.
The victim is Mariam Begum, 20, wife of Nurunnabi Mondol of the village.
Sub-Inspector Md. Abdul Halim of Enayetpur Police Station said locals found the body hanging inside the house and then informed the police. Police recovered the body at around 12:30pm and sent it to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Mariam was beaten to death by her in-laws, who later hung the body inside the house to pass it off as suicide, police said.
Nurunnabi and his family members went into hiding soon after the incident.
