Journalist Mizanur released on bail

Tortured journalist ABM Mizanur Rahman, Baufal upazila correspondent of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, got release from Patuakhali jail yesterday afternoon, upon an ad-interim bail earlier granted by the High Court.

Police arrested Mizanur from Kalaiya Bazar area of Baufal upazila around 8:00pm on March 17 on charge of assaulting Halim, assistant sub-inspector of Baufal Police Station, and preventing police from discharging duties, and brutally tortured him in police custody on the night.

The next day, police sent him to a Patuakhali court that sent him to jail.

Earlier, in response to two bail petitions filed by Mizanur, the High Court also issued two rules upon the government to explain in four weeks why journalist Mizanur Rahman should not be granted regular bail in the cases filed against him.

The HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Md Khasruzzaman granted the bail until disposal of the rules.
