Gems of Nazrul, a premier cultural platform in Bangladesh dedicated to preserving, promoting, and popularising the vast musical genius of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special musical evening titled “Ek Doshoker Surjatra” on Saturday at The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka.

The event celebrated a decade of preserving and promoting the musical legacy of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, bringing together cherished memories and melodies from his timeless repertoire.

“Nazrul is not merely the poet of rebellion; he is also the poet of humanity, equality and secularism. Through Gems of Nazrul, we aim to introduce his diverse musical legacy to younger generations, preserve the authenticity of his lyrics and melodies, and bring his creations to a wider global audience,” said Sadya Afreen Mallick, founder and president of Gems of Nazrul.

“Nazrul was deeply secular, and he demonstrated this through his life and work. He named his son Krishna Mohammad and married a woman from the Sanatan Hindu faith, embodying religious harmony through his personal life,” said Dr Asit Roy, a renowned music professor and vocalist.

The programme reflected on the organisation’s journey of celebrating Nazrul’s diverse creative expressions, spanning love, rebellion, devotion, humanity and nature. It also reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the poet’s music alive for future generations.

The evening concluded with a dinner reception for the attendees.
