“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is on course for another dominant weekend at the North American box office, with the Tom Holland-led superhero film projected to remain atop the chart in its fourth weekend.

The Sony release earned an estimated $9.8 million on Friday and is expected to collect around $36.5 million over the weekend. If the projection holds, its domestic total will reach approximately $852.4 million.

That would push “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” past 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to become the third-highest-grossing film in domestic box-office history, behind only “Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens” and “Avengers: Endgame”.

The film has already set a global record for Sony Pictures, becoming the studio’s highest-grossing release worldwide.

The weekend’s other major release, “Insidious: Out of the Further”, opened in second place. The sixth instalment in the horror franchise earned $10.6 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and is projected to gross $23.7 million over the weekend.

Released across 3,330 North American theatres, the film stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Lin Shaye. It follows a young mother who discovers she can bring spirits back with her into the real world.

“Insidious: Out of the Further” received a C+ CinemaScore, tying “Insidious: The Red Door” for the lowest audience grade in the franchise. The film has an 18 million production budget and currently holds a 60 per cent critics’ score and a 70 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jason Statham’s “Mutiny”, meanwhile, opened to an estimated $2.8 million on Friday, including previews. Lionsgate expects the action thriller to finish the weekend with around $7.4 million, placing it sixth.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, “Mutiny” stars Statham as a former Marine who is framed for murder and sets out to prove his innocence. The film carries a $40 million production budget and has received a B+ CinemaScore.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is projected to hold third place in its sixth weekend, adding an estimated $18.5 million to bring its domestic total to approximately $538 million.
The mythological epic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and has become one of the year’s major theatrical successes.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros’ “The End of Oak Street” is expected to take around $8 million in its second weekend, while Paramount’s animated “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” is also targeting roughly $8 million.

A24’s “Tony”, starring Dominic Sessa as a teenage Anthony Bourdain, is expanding to 1,600 North American theatres and is projected to earn about $4.8 million.

Universal’s 25th-anniversary rerelease of “The Fast and the Furious” is expected to make around $3.3 million, while “Spa Weekend” is tracking toward $3 million.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” stars Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film recently became the fastest movie to cross $800 million domestically.
