A four-day photography exhibition, discussion and tribute programme marking World Photography Day entered its second day at Drik Gallery in Dhaka today, with a discussion exploring the works, artistic philosophy and life of renowned Indian photographer and photojournalist Raghu Rai.

Organised by students of the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, the programme seeks to present Rai beyond his celebrated career as a photojournalist, tracing his artistic journey and the philosophy that shaped his distinctive body of work.

Rai’s connection with Bangladesh’s history is particularly significant. During the 1971 Liberation War, he documented the lives of refugees in camps across India, creating photographs that later became important visual records of the war and its humanitarian consequences.

As part of the programme, organisers collected 17 of Rai’s photobooks, eight of which were discussed during today’s session. Participants examined the technical elements, artistic philosophy and distinctive visual language reflected in his work.

A “reflection book” was also placed at the gallery, allowing visitors to leave messages as a tribute to Rai. The exhibition space features photographs of the photographer himself, including family photographs and portraits, displayed alongside his photobooks.

“We wanted to showcase his philosophy and his works beyond his photojournalism career. Beyond his work, we wanted to trace his life journey. That is why we showcased the person himself alongside his works in our gallery,” said Md Tarik Rahman Emon, one of the organisers.

The programme will continue for two more days, featuring further discussions and activities focusing on Rai’s life, artistic journey and lasting contribution to photography.
