Daisy Edgar-Jones to lead new adaptation of ‘Sense and Sensibility’
Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to bring one of Jane Austen’s most beloved heroines to life in a new adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility”. The first trailer for the upcoming film was released on Thursday (June 25), offering audiences a glimpse of the latest retelling of the literary classic.
The “Twisters” star will portray Elinor Dashwood, the eldest of the Dashwood sisters, whose life is turned upside down following the death of her father. Forced to leave their family estate, Elinor, her sisters and their widowed mother relocate to a modest cottage, where they face love, loss and the social expectations of 19th-century England.
The film is directed by Georgia Oakley, whose debut feature “Blue Jean” received widespread critical acclaim. The screenplay has been adapted by Australian author Diana Reid, while Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing alongside India Flint and Jo Wallett.
Originally published in 1811 under the pseudonym “By a Lady”, “Sense and Sensibility” is widely regarded as one of Austen’s defining novels. The story follows the contrasting personalities of sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood as they navigate romance and hardship after losing both their father and their family’s financial security.
While the reserved and practical Elinor develops feelings for Edward Ferrars, the passionate Marianne becomes entangled in a complicated romance with the charismatic John Willoughby before finding comfort in Colonel Brandon.
Edgar-Jones rose to international prominence with the acclaimed television adaptation of Sally Rooney’s “Normal People” in 2020. She has since starred in films including “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “Twisters”, establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s rising stars.
The new adaptation is expected to introduce Austen’s enduring story to a new generation while remaining faithful to the emotional depth and themes that have made the novel a literary classic for more than two centuries.
