Mejbaur Rahman Sumon’s ‘Hawa’ and ‘Roid’ screen together at Star Cineplex
Audiences will have the opportunity to watch two of director Mejbaur Rahman Sumon’s acclaimed films on the big screen as “Hawa” and “Roid” are set for a joint theatrical run at Star Cineplex from today.
The screenings bring together the filmmaker’s first two feature films, both of which have earned critical acclaim while showcasing distinct storytelling styles and cinematic approaches.
Released in 2022, “Hawa” marked a turning point for contemporary Bangladeshi cinema. Arriving at a time when the local film industry was recovering from the effects of the pandemic, the film drew audiences back to theatres and emerged as both a commercial and critical success.
Blending folklore, mystery and life at sea, the film was widely praised for its cinematography, sound design, performances and visual storytelling. Its soundtrack, particularly the songs “Shada Shada Kala Kala”, “Aat Ta Baje Deri Koris Na” and “E Hawa”, also became cultural phenomena, enjoying widespread popularity both at home and abroad.
Beyond its domestic success, “Hawa” travelled to several international film festivals and secured theatrical releases in multiple countries, further strengthening its reputation among global audiences.
Sumon’s second feature, “Roid”, premiered during Eid-ul-Azha 2026 and quickly generated discussion among viewers and critics for its unconventional treatment of a love story. The film has been praised for its symbolic narrative, visual language and atmospheric storytelling, prompting extensive conversations on social media and among film scholars.
The film has also attracted international attention through screenings at several prestigious festivals, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, International Film Festival Innsbruck and the Seattle International Film Festival.
With both films returning to theatres simultaneously, audiences will have a chance to revisit “Hawa” or experience “Roid” alongside it, offering a rare opportunity to explore the evolution of one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated contemporary filmmakers on the big screen.
