Barbie movie: Margot Robbie’s look as the iconic doll unveiled

Margot Robbie will produce and star in the movie "Barbie", which is written and directed by Greta Gerwig, in partnership with Noah Baumbach as co-writer.  The news marked the famed blonde-haired doll's 60th anniversary. "Barbie" will be premiering in theatres on July 21, 2023. Ryan Gosling will be co-starring as Barbie's iconic love interest, Ken.

The "Suicide Squad" star admitted to British Vogue that the film "comes with a lot of baggage and a lot of nostalgic connections" to honor the doll's legacy.

It is going to be quite a thrilling experience for the fans of Margot Robbie because they have seen her as the fierce Harley Quinn before, but now, she will play the lovable Barbie, a role which is the complete opposite of Harley Quinn. Moreover, as Gerwig will be writing and directing the film, we can expect to see a completely new and realistic version of the Barbie world in it.

Earlier in 2016, Amy Schumer was supposed to be in "Barbie" but later, she backed off saying that there were scheduling conflicts.

However, she later revealed that there were creative differences behind-the-scenes.

Schumer wanted Barbie to be an "ambitious inventor," but the makers allegedly pushed back that her invention be high heels made of Jell-O. "I felt like I was disappointing my team by not being Barbie," Schumer recalled, adding that she was sent a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate the film deal at the time. "The idea that that's just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, 'You've got the wrong gal," she had said, according to media reports.

It was indeed disappointing to see that the makers couldn't get the age-old perfect picture of Barbie out of their minds and wanted to stick to it, while Schumer was trying to represent Barbie as a strong character. 

However, by 2019, Robbie took over the new Warner Bros production.

"Sex Education" star Emma Mackey, who is known to be a lookalike of Robbie, has also been cast in the movie. It is currently unknown what part Mackey will play in the project.
