Eminent actor, playwright and academician Dr Enamul Haque passed away today at his residence, leaving fans, well-wishers and the entertainment fraternity in dismay.

Abul Hayat, legendary actor and long-time colleague and friend of the great artiste, was in total shock as he talked to The Daily Star.

"I cannot believe that he is no more," he said. "Even though we have an age gap, we were the closest of friends. I am shocked, and I do not know how to take this."

The two great artistes talked over the phone 10-15 days ago, according to Abul Hayat. "Once we started talking, none of us wanted to hang up."

From reminiscing the olden days when they were founding members of Nagorik Natya Sampradaya, to talking about the various television dramas and projects that they did together, the two always had a tight bond.

"I have never seen a humbler person," said Abul Hayat. "His ability to befriend people was uncanny. Everyone loved him. I just cannot believe that we lost him. I haven't just lost a friend, but a great artiste and a confidante."
