If one claims to be an artiste, they need to act like one as well: Moushumi

Shah Alam Shazu

Moushumi is one of the most revered actors in the history of Bangladesh. She has gifted countless hits in her illustrious career of over 28 years. The National Award winner talks to The Daily Star about her career, philosophy and more.

You have given more than two decades to the film industry. What kind of a person do you think an artiste should be?

I feel like an artiste has to act responsibly, and present himself or herself in a way that they can represent the country. They cannot be easily hurt, and be wary of the example that they are setting for their fans.

Years of hard work and dedication is required for one to claim themselves a true artiste. If you want to say that you are an artiste, you have to act like one.

After making your debut in 1993, you have many blockbusters to your name. Do you have any regrets in your career?

I do not have any regrets at all. I never think of what 'could have been'. What I could not achieve, was simply never to be – and I am content with what I could achieve.

What do you think of the current standing of Bangladesh Cholochitro Shilpi Samity, supending the membership of some members?

The Cholochitro Shilpi Samity exists for the betterment of the artistes. It has a responsibility of standing beside ones who need help, as well as to keep in line the ones who have gone astray.

Artistes need to have faith in the organisation, and the organisation has to do all it can to help the artistes. Mistakes can happen on any side, and it can be solved efficiently and quietly.

Even if there is an incident which requires someone's membership, a fair investigation has to take place, and the association must speak to the artistes in privacy before making anything public.

The film fraternity often refers to you as a shongshari woman. What do you say to that?

(Laughs) It is true that I am a family-oriented woman. My family always comes first to me, no matter what. My son has recently gotten married to a girl who just finished her O-levels, and now, I think about my family even more.
