Many still call me ‘Boro Chele’: Apurba

Shah Alam Shazu

With a myriad of fantastic tele-fictions in his arsenal, Apurba has become a generation defining actor. The mega-star talks to The Daily Star about his current projects, 16-year career and more.

You have been acting in television dramas for sixteen years in a row - how far do you want to go with acting?

I set foot in this industry with the dream of becoming an actor. However, I never imagined that I would get so much praise and fame. I only ever hoped that my work will resonate with the audience. Many years have passed since then, and acting is now both my hobby and profession. It's my love. It's actually not about far I want to go rather how much good work I can keep doing.

We see you mostly in romantic dramas. Why is that?

That's not completely correct. There was a time when I acted in a lot of romantic dramas. However, that doesn't mean that I am confined to them. A director's conception of the drama needs to be in sync with how I act. An actor's job is to work according to the script. That's what I do. See, I have been offered to act in various dramas yet I want to bring something new to the table.

The "Boro Chele" telefilm has been one of the highlights of your career. How does it feel like to star as the lead in a telefilm that is loved by so many?

In the past 5 years, this has been one of the most popular telefilms ever made here. It is not that there haven't been as many discussions about my other telefilms. However, "Boro Chele" is has stood the test of time. A lot of people still call me "Boro Chele". As an actor, this is my biggest achievement.

Many people think that viewers are not as interested in television dramas anymore. What is your take on that?

I do not agree. People are still watching dramas despite the oversaturation of television channels. Most channels stream dramas for majority of the time. Investors have also increased in this sector and many people are working as actors. Maybe every drama isn't as popular, but people do understand the value of a quality project. A lot of good work is still being done in this sector.
