DU expels 16 students

Dhaka University has expelled 16 students for life, seven of them for their involvement in the banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir.

The university syndicate meeting presided over by Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique last night decided to expel six students for resorting to fraudulence in university admission tests.

“They have been expelled for giving proxy tests and resorting to fraudulence in admission tests,” said DU Proctor AM Amzad.

Two students were expelled for assaulting a female student in TSC area and for vandalising the office of the provost of Amar Ekushey Hall.

Rajib Baroi, a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist and third-year student of Pali & Buddhist Studies, was expelled for robbing a youth by threatening to rape his female friend.

Proctor Amzad said, “We suspended them after the allegations were raised. After separate investigations, the DU authorities expelled the guilty students.”

The syndicate meeting also suspended a teacher of German language under the Institute of Modern Language for allegedly moonlighting at an embassy illegally.

A five-member probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.

The syndicate also suspended the salary increments of a teacher of the department of Persian language and literature for three years for having a relationship with a student, a syndicate member told The Daily Star.
