Jewellery shop looted in city

A woman died in panic while three men were hurt as criminals exploded crude bombs while looting a jewellery shop at Kuril in the city last night.

Johura Begum, 65, was the owner of the building that housed the shop.

Police sources said a gang of six to seven men stormed “New IK Jewelers” around 8:30pm and fled with 32 gold chains, 94 rings and 112 earrings.

Hearing a hue and cry, locals tried to catch the culprits but they escaped exploding three to four crude bombs, injuring three.

Quoting Johura's family members, Nurul Muttakin, officer-in-charge of Vatara Police Station, said the elderly woman was lying on her bed as her health condition was already bad.

Police sources said she died probably after having a heart attack in panic on hearing the blasts.

Injured Jakir Hossain, 35, told reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital that he was hit by splinters while returning to his home from a local mosque.

”While I was crossing the jewellery shop, I heard a bang and suddenly felt that something hit my legs. People started to run here and there for shelter,” he said. “Locals brought me to the hospital as I was not being able to move.” 

Police were raiding several places to arrest the burglars.
