Three cops suspended for harassing businessman

Three cops of Uttara Paschim Police Station have been suspended for allegedly harassing a businessman and his female friend for extortion money. 

They are Sub-inspector Rauf Bahadur, Assistant Sub-inspector Faruk Ahmed and constable Golam Mortuza.

The trio were suspended on Monday after the allegation against them was found to be true in the primary investigation, said Maruf Hossain Sarker, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Bidhan Chandra Tripura, deputy commissioner (Uttara division) of the DMP, told The Daily Star that the three cops harassed the businessman and his friend on Sunday night after stopping their CNG-run auto-rickshaw at a checkpost in Uttara.

Police sources said the victims were confined to a place near the checkpoint for about six hours since 11:30pm.

The accused policemen demanded Tk 5 lakh in extortion money for their release. They also threatened to frame the duo if they failed to pay them the money.

Later, the victims gave the trio Tk 2.5 lakh with the help a friend and were freed.

From there, the businessman went straight to the DMP DC's office in Uttara and filed a complaint against the policemen.

A probe-body comprising an assistant commissioner (Uttara division) of the DMP was formed to probe the allegation, added the sources.
