Two workers died after entering a septic tank at an under-construction building in Patuakhali Sadar upazila today, with locals suspecting toxic gas buildup inside the tank.

The incident occurred around 11:00am in Chouddoburia village under Kamalapur union.

The deceased were identified as Md Nuh, 26, and Ashraf, 50, both residents of the area.

According to local residents, Ashraf first entered a long-sealed septic tank at an under-construction building owned by Aftar Sikder.

When he did not return, Nuh entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him. He also became trapped inside.

Locals later broke open part of the tank and recovered the bodies of both men.

Union parishad member Abu Jafar described the incident as tragic.

"Ashraf was a mason and father of three children, while Nuh worked as a day labourer and had recently gotten married," he said.

Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Moniruzzaman said police had learned of the incident, but no complaint had been filed.
