In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the government has transferred 767 Sub-Assistant Engineers of the Public Works Department (PWD) through a lottery-based system.

The lottery was held yesterday at the conference room of the Public Works Building in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, where the posting locations and branches for 767 Civil Sub-Assistant Engineers across the country’s eight administrative divisions were determined.

The entire process was supervised and coordinated by Additional Secretary Md Sarwar Alam of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

According to the lottery results, 317 engineers were posted to offices in the Dhaka division, 133 to Chattogram, 74 to Khulna, 73 to Rajshahi, 64 to Rangpur, 44 to Barishal, 33 to Sylhet, and 29 to Mymensingh.

The officers have been assigned to various branches of the PWD headquarters, divisional offices, and district-level executive engineer offices.

Speaking about the initiative, Sarwar Alam said, “Conducting transfers through a lottery ensures transparency, impartiality, and accountability. It also marks the beginning of an effective, modern, and widely accepted approach to human resource management.”

Additional Chief Engineer Kazi Md Firoz Hasan was also involved in organising the lottery-based transfers.

PWD Chief Engineer Md Khalekuzzaman Choudhury was, among others, present.
