Schoolgirl allegedly raped in Netrokona

A 13-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly raped on her way to her elder sister’s house in Kendua upazila of Netrokona on Monday.

The victim’s father filed a case with Kendua Police Station early yesterday under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against Md Moti Mia, 55, of Batta Bhatipara village, in this connection.

According to the complaint and local sources, the incident took place around 7:30pm in the Batta area.

The victim, an eighth-grader and resident of Mozaffarpur union, was walking to her sister’s house. As she reached the Batta area, Moti allegedly grabbed and gagged her and raped her in a nearby jute field. Hearing the girl’s screams, locals rushed to the spot, prompting the accused to flee.

Moti has been absconding since the incident.

Muhammad Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station, said the girl had been sent to a local hospital for medical examination, and drives were on to arrest the accused.
