A Bangladeshi businessman was shot dead by miscreants in South Africa, a day after another Bangladeshi expatriate was killed in a shooting in the same country.

The deceased was identified as Belayet Hossain, 38, of Mir Warishpur village in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila.

The incident took place around 3:00pm on Wednesday (local time) inside a business establishment in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Confirming the incident, the victim's relative, Md Hanif, said that a group of miscreants shot Belayet inside the shop and fled the scene. He died on the spot.

The victim’s paternal uncle, Md Russell, told The Daily Star that Md Rubel Hossain, a cousin of the victim living in South Africa, informed the family about the incident today.

Earlier, on Tuesday evening (local time), another Bangladeshi expatriate from Noakhali, Md Yasin, 40, was shot dead by criminals in front of his home in Port Elizabeth. He also died on the spot.

The two separate incidents within 24 hours have left families and relatives of Bangladeshi expatriates in Noakhali deeply anxious about the safety of their loved ones in South Africa.

When contacted, Md Samsuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station, said he was unaware of the matter.

Begumganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Kaesur Rahman told the Daily Star that he saw the news of the killing on social media, but did not have detailed information regarding the matter.
