A case has been filed against 57 people, including 17 named accused, over an attack on two police officers during an operation to arrest a drug case accused in Savar yesterday evening.

The case was filed early today by Sub-Inspector (SI) SM Shamim of Savar Model Police Station, naming Rafiqul Islam, a warrant-listed accused in a drug case, as the prime accused.

Confirming the matter to The Daily Star, Inspector (Investigation) Noor Mohammad of Savar Model Police Station said police arrested five accused during overnight drives in the Baktarpur area.

The arrestees are Arif Islam, 20; Sagar Mia, 23; Maruf, 20; Rakes Mal, 30; and Humayun, 19.

"They are all named accused in the case and have been sent to court with a prayer for a five-day remand," he said.

According to the case statement, SI Shamim and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mashiur Rahman went to the Balur Math area of Baktarpur around 7:40pm yesterday to arrest Rafiqul Islam.

Police alleged that Rafiqul shouted for help and gathered others at the scene, who then obstructed the arrest operation and attacked the officers.

The complaint states that Rafiqul struck SI Shamim with a brick, while ASI Mashiur Rahman was allegedly assaulted with sticks and iron rods by other accused.

Both officers sustained injuries and were later taken to Savar Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Police said additional forces rushed to the area after receiving information, but the attackers fled before they arrived.

The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.
