A 28-year-old expatriate’s wife was allegedly assaulted and had her hair forcibly chopped off over accusations of an extramarital affair in Faridpur Sadar upazila.

Two videos showing the woman being assaulted spread on social media around 10:00pm yesterday.

After an examination of the videos, lasting one minute and 38 seconds and one minute and 30 seconds, respectively, and inquiries, police revealed that the incident took place in the afternoon at Beparidangi village under Krishnapur union.

The woman’s husband works in Saudi Arabia.

Abdullah Al Mamun Shah, officer-in-charge of Sadarpur Police Station, said several police teams had started working to identify those involved in the incident.

In the first video, the woman is seen sitting on a chair as two young men assault her. One, wearing a black T-shirt, holds her by the hand while the other, wearing a checked T-shirt, cuts her hair unevenly with scissors. Despite her screams and pleas to stop, they continue before slapping her towards the end of the video.

Locals identified the alleged perpetrators as Sumon Hossain, 28, and Joy Hossain, 32. They are nephews of the woman’s husband, Md Jalil Molla, a member of Krishnapur Union Parishad said quoting local sources.

In the second video, the woman and a man are seen tied to a tree with ropes at night and being beaten.

Quoting locals, the OC said the woman returned to her husband’s house from her parents’ home on Saturday. That night, family members allegedly found a young man in her room and detained both of them. The man was caught by locals when he tried to flee.

The two were kept confined throughout the day. In the afternoon, the woman’s hair was chopped off before she was sent back to her parents’ home. The detained man was later released, the OC said.

“If someone commits a crime, there is a law to deal with it. Taking the law into one’s own hands is never acceptable. This was certainly an unlawful act,” the OC said.
