A parliamentary body today recommended filling all vacant headteacher posts at government primary schools as soon as possible and making moral education compulsory at the primary level.

It also called for increasing the number of primary schools to ensure all children across the country can enrol.

The recommendations were made at the first meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education of the 13th Parliament, according to a Parliament Secretariat press release.

Committee Chair Mahmuda Habiba presided over the meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The committee also recommended ensuring food quality and children's nutrition under the ongoing school feeding programme. It called for punitive action against those responsible if the required quality is not maintained.

It further recommended proper implementation of budgets allocated to different sectors under the ministry.

During the meeting, officials presented sector-wise budget allocations and expenditure plans for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027.

The presentation covered the Directorate of Primary Education, Bureau of Non-Formal Education, Shishu Kallyan Trust, National Academy for Primary Education and Compulsory Primary Education Implementation Monitoring Unit.

The committee also advised its members to visit primary schools during school hours to observe their activities first-hand.

Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon and State Minister Bobby Hajjaj attended the meeting as committee members.

Other committee members, senior ministry officials, heads of agencies under the ministry and officials of the Parliament Secretariat were also present.
