- Macron sees no ‘energy truce on Russian side’
- EU adopts nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting Russia
Waves of Russian strikes on Ukraine overnight and into yesterday killed several people and wounded dozens, including attacks on energy facilities which Kyiv called a violation of a ceasefire on such targets announced by Donald Trump.
Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky said his country would retaliate if Moscow did not agree to the “energy ceasefire”.
“If Russia does not agree to an energy ceasefire, we will respond,” Zelensky told the Warsaw Security Forum via videolink.
Trump sowed confusion when he announced an energy ceasefire between the two warring countries without providing details, sparking astonishment in Kyiv, silence from Moscow and support from Ukraine’s Western allies.
Russia, for its part, said talks were ongoing about a possible energy ceasefire, and Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said further information would be revealed in due course. But he also rejected Zelenskiy’s proposal for a 60-day truce.
French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday said he had not noticed “any energy truce on the Russian side”.
The European Union yesterday formally added almost 1,600 new individuals and entities to its sanctions blacklist over Russia’s war on Ukraine, in a bid to keep pressure on Moscow.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that all western countries should be more decisive in containing Russia, as the invasion of Ukraine enters a fifth winter.
