Your Fall To-do List
After that long, skin-burning, hectic summer you're surely craving some fun. Now that fall (or autumn) is finally here, check out the things you can do to heal and lighten up.
STEP OUTSIDE
Tour time! This air is just right to go out. Almost every weekend in fall I go for a picnic with family or friends. You could also go on a short visit to your village home or go camping. On cooler days, I just go out for a walk down the streets early in the morning to see sunrise. You can grab this opportunity to resume your jogging routine.
GET SPORTY
I play cricket or badminton with my cousins and neighbours outside – in the park or on the rooftop. No matter how badly you play, this is the best time to have fun. Even cheering on at a local friendly football match sounds good, doesn't it?
TRICK-OR-TREAT
Of late, Dhakaites have started to celebrate Halloween. If you don't want to join one, you can arrange theme parties on your own. If you want to try cooking new recipes and organise the most amazing barbecue, this is the time to do it.
SAVE WHAT YOU SEE
Autumn gifts scenes to behold, sights to preserve. When I was a kid, my parents used to take me to places with picturesque views. I was too bad a painter to give life to these beautiful visuals. I still am. So I snap photographs to treasure the autumnal glances. Those who love to paint should take a break and head out to their favourite drawing spots. They say nothing inspires better than nature's splendour. You know what to do.
DIY
Handicrafts are another reason I love October. At the very beginning of fall, I decorate my home anew. I make wreaths with fall flowers or with paper and fabric. You can carve a pumpkin and put a candle inside. Yellow leaves are the symbol of this season; add the leafy theme to your crafts. Since winter will be here in no time, traditional preparations apart, you could try making a quilt with old sweatshirt scraps. There are a thousand more ideas on the Internet to work with. Google and go!
(NOT ONLY) WRITERS WRITE
For me this is the best part. The entire setting of autumn is rich; it pretty much calls you to pen down your thoughts. This would be a good time to start that daily journal. The weather and ambiance during this season also create the perfect setting for mysteries and spooky stories. You could write a gothic fiction of your own.
GET COSY
Lazy, cosy days at home can also be brought under the shade of fall. Find and watch autumn-themed movies. You could also listen to the music attuned to autumn.
DONATE
To share is to care. Winter is near. Go through your closet and donate the clothes you no longer wear. There are many social welfare organisations in Bangladesh that can help you get your donations to those in need. Every year groups of volunteers – with warm clothes and blankets – travel to parts of Bangladesh that feel the cruel bites of winter the most. You could either team up with them or form your own group to serve the needy.
Enough said. The idea is to make the best of this season. On your mark, get set, go.
