200 the new benchmark: Farhan celebrates first series win as captain

Pakistan captain Sahibzada Farhan had every reason to smile after leading his side to an emphatic series victory over Sri Lanka, with a commanding 82-run win in the second T20I on Sunday sealing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

For Farhan, the victory marked his first series triumph as Pakistan captain. But beyond the personal milestone, the skipper was particularly pleased with the aggressive batting approach that has transformed Pakistan’s T20I performances in 2026, with the team increasingly confident of crossing the 200-run mark.

Despite a relatively slow start in the Powerplay, Farhan remained convinced that Pakistan would post a total in excess of 200 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. His confidence proved justified as a sensational innings from Maaz Sadaqat and a commanding contribution from the captain himself powered the hosts to 215-3, their highest T20 total on home soil.

215-3: It was the highest team score Pakistan have put together in men's T20Is on home soil and their second best overall only behind the 232/6 they managed against England in Nottingham in 2021.

“I was sure that we would end up scoring more than 200 despite not scoring much in the Powerplay,” Farhan said after the match.

“We have been a different T20I side in 2026 as our six-hitting ratio has improved and our batters are scoring at more than 150. If we continue this way, we will end up scoring more than 200 every time. We will play with the same intensity with which we have played these two matches in the next match.”

The statement reflected the confidence surrounding Pakistan’s batting unit, which has embraced a more attacking approach and demonstrated its ability to accelerate even after a modest start.

Farhan led from the front, scoring a fluent 73 off 44 balls, while Sadaqat narrowly missed a maiden T20I century with a breathtaking 51-ball 96. The pair added 88 runs for the second wicket off just 49 deliveries, putting Sri Lanka under mounting pressure after the visitors squandered three catching opportunities.

Farhan was dropped on two and 11, while Sadaqat survived a chance on 44. Both batters made Sri Lanka pay dearly for its fielding lapses, combining power with calculated aggression to put Pakistan firmly in control.

Farhan struck five sixes and four boundaries before departing in the 15th over, but Sadaqat continued the assault. The young batter smashed seven sixes and six fours, equalling the record for the most sixes by a Pakistan batter in a T20 international, before falling off the final delivery of the innings.

Sadaqat also combined with Hasan Nawaz for a rapid 72-run stand off 31 balls, helping Pakistan plunder 70 runs in the final five overs. The late surge carried the hosts beyond their previous highest home T20 total of 208-3, recorded against the West Indies in Karachi five years earlier.

With 216 required for victory, Sri Lanka struggled to build momentum against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Mohammad Imran delivered a decisive spell, claiming three wickets for just 11 runs as the visitors slumped to 133-7.

  • Pakistan's highest totals in  Men's T20I
  • SCORE        OPPOSITION
  • 232/6         v England, Nottingham, 2021
  • 215/3         v Sri Lanka, Rawalpindi, 2026
  • 212/8         v Sri Lanka, Pallekelle, 2026
  • 208/3         v West Indies, Karachi, 2021
  • 207/1         v New Zealand, Auckland, 2025

Maheesh Theekshana remained unbeaten on 32, while Chamindu Wickramasinghe contributed 29, but their efforts came too late to threaten Pakistan’s imposing total. Kamindu Mendis made 23 and Sineth Jayawadena scored 22, yet Sri Lanka lost wickets at regular intervals and never mounted a serious challenge.

The 82-run victory was Pakistan’s biggest T20I win over Sri Lanka, underlining the gulf between the two sides on the day and strengthening Farhan’s early credentials as captain.

For the Pakistan skipper, however, the focus was already shifting towards sustaining the team’s newfound attacking mindset. Rather than treating 200 as an exceptional total, Farhan wants his batters to view it as a regular target in the shortest format.

The 13 sixes Pakistan managed was also the equal second most they have hit in any individual men's T20I, just two behind their overall best of 15 against Ireland in Dublin in 2024.

His emphasis on improved six-hitting and a scoring rate above 150 highlights a clear shift in Pakistan’s approach, with the side looking to maintain pressure throughout the innings instead of relying solely on a late flourish.

Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis, meanwhile, identified poor fielding as a major reason behind his team’s defeat, admitting that missed opportunities had proved costly despite the side’s recent improvements in the department.

Pakistan will now look to complete a clean sweep when the teams meet in the third and final T20I on Tuesday.
