Hope takes over India: Records, runs and relentless dominance
Shai Hope’s remarkable dominance in India has emerged as one of the defining stories of the West Indies’ tour, with the captain delivering a stunning combination of consistency, endurance and explosive stroke-play across the ODI and T20I formats.
From a modest beginning in the first ODI to an unbeaten century that powered one of the greatest successful chases in men’s T20 international history, Hope has demonstrated why he is increasingly regarded as one of the most formidable white-ball batters in world cricket.
Hope began the tour with 12 runs in the opening ODI, but that subdued performance proved to be only a brief interruption before an extraordinary run of form. He responded emphatically in the second ODI, scoring a commanding 104 to underline his ability to build an innings and accelerate when required.
However, it was his unbeaten 162 in the third ODI that truly captured attention. His match-winning knock showcased remarkable concentration, power and composure, establishing his authority against a formidable Indian attack. The innings was particularly significant because it made him the highest-scoring wicketkeeper-captain in ODI cricket, highlighting the historic nature of his achievement.
Hope’s brilliance extended seamlessly into the shortest format. He scored a valuable 52 in the first T20I, providing further evidence of his adaptability and consistency across formats. His defining moment arrived in the second T20I in Ranchi, where he produced an unbeaten 102 off just 45 balls to lead the West Indies to a spectacular six-wicket victory.
Chasing India’s imposing total of 249 for five, the visitors reached 250 for four with nine balls remaining, completing their highest successful chase in men’s T20 internationals.
The victory also represented the second-highest successful chase in men’s T20I history, behind South Africa’s pursuit of 259 against the West Indies in 2023.
Hope’s century, featuring six fours and nine sixes, was the second-fastest T20I hundred by a West Indies batter, behind Johnson Charles’s 39-ball effort against South Africa in 2023. His innings combined calculated aggression with exceptional timing, dismantling India’s bowling attack under enormous pressure.
Hope’s partnership with Sherfane Rutherford was equally decisive. The pair added 120 runs for the fourth wicket, establishing a West Indies record for that position in men’s T20Is. Rutherford contributed an explosive 84, but Hope remained unbeaten to complete the chase and secure a memorable victory.
Their partnership transformed a challenging pursuit into a historic triumph, demonstrating the captain’s ability to inspire teammates when the odds appeared stacked against them.
Rutherford later called Hope a "phenomenal player" and one who "inspires" him.
The Ranchi contest produced several remarkable statistical milestones. The teams accumulated 501 runs, making it the second-highest match aggregate in men’s T20I cricket.
Hope also became the only wicketkeeper-captain to score a T20I century, achieving the feat twice, following his unbeaten 102 against Australia in 2024. Furthermore, his unbeaten 162 in the third ODI and his T20I century came just six days apart, the shortest interval between an ODI 150 and a T20I hundred by any batter.
Across the five innings specified on this tour, Hope has accumulated 432 runs, across his three ODI and two T20I appearances. His tally includes three centuries and a half-century, with the unbeaten innings of 162 and 102 highlighting his capacity to dominate in different conditions and formats.
Beyond the numbers, Hope’s performances have challenged perceptions that his white-ball achievements have sometimes been overlooked. His ability to recover from a quiet start, endure physical discomfort during the third ODI and then produce a breathtaking T20I century reflects both mental resilience and technical excellence.
Hope’s dominance in India has therefore been more than a sequence of impressive scores. It has been a statement of leadership, adaptability and world-class batting.
