Miraz, Mahmud show grit as Bangladesh end Day 2 with 153-run lead
Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 32 off 73 balls while Hasan Mahmud was not out on 13 off 76 deliveries as Bangladesh ended Day 2 of the first Test against Australia on Friday with 351 runs on the board, having lost six wickets.
Miraz and Mahmud showed tremendous grit to salvage a tricky period, after the second new balls accounted for three top-order batters, with an unbroken 43-run partnership in 24.3 overs.
Bangladesh were leading by 153 runs at stumps.
Miraz, who is coming into the Test match on the back of a century in the warm-up game, was given a reprieve off the final delivery when Cameron Green dropped him off Marnus Labuschagne.
Mahmud, who took six wickets in the Australia innings, was more resolute with a solid defence as Bangladesh will look to extend their first-innings lead on Saturday.

Australian pacers brought their side back into the match by taking three quick wickets in the post-tea session, but Bangladesh remained in a dominant position as their lead crossed 100 runs on the second day of the opening Test in Darwin on Friday.
Josh Hazlewood provided Australia with an important breakthrough after tea, dismissing Najmul Hossain Shanto for 84 to end his 66-run partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim for the fourth wicket.
Mitchell Starc then removed Litton Das for a duck to claim his second wicket of the innings. Captain Pat Cummins joined the action in the following over, dismissing Mushfiqur for 36 to reduce Bangladesh to 308 for six.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud were unbeaten on seven and five, respectively, as Bangladesh reached 318 for six, extending their lead to 120 runs.
Tanzid departs but Shanto, Mushfiqur continue to extend lead
Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim departed just after completing his maiden Test ton but skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and experienced Mushfiqur Rahim continued to extend Bangladesh’s lead over Australia on the second day of the opening Test in Darwin on Friday.
Tanzid struck 101 off 197 balls before he was caught at long-off by Mitchell Starc off Nathan Lyon’s delivery. The southpaw earlier became the first Bangladeshi to score a Test ton on Australian soil off Lyon’s previous over but later, he couldn’t make his first ton into a bigger one.
Despite Tanzid’s departure, Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim continued to dominate over Australia as Bangladesh reached 286 for three at tea. Shanto was batting on 79 runs while Mushfiqur made 26 as the pair already stitched a partnership of 55 runs for the fourth wicket, extending the lead to 88 runs over Australia’s first innings total of 198 runs.
Tanzid scores maiden Test ton as Bangladesh continue to dominate
Tanzid Hasan Tamim struck his maiden Test ton as Bangladesh continued to dominate against Australia on the second day of the opening Test in Darwin on Friday.
Tanzid took a single from Nathan Lyon in the second session of day two to complete his hundred off 188 balls which included eight fours and a six and he also became the first Bangladesh batter ever to score a Test ton on Australian soil.

Before Tanzid’s hundred, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto also completed his seventh Test fifty in the same over as Bangladesh reached 230 for two in their first innings – taking 32 runs lead over Australia, who made 198 runs in their first innings.
Bangladesh continue to frustrate Australia
Bangladesh have taken the lead in the first Test against Australia, reaching 214 for two after 58 overs at Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Friday.
Tanzid Hasan Tamim cut Mitchell Starc for a boundary to take Bangladesh past Australia's first-innings total of 198, giving the Tigers a first-innings lead in only the fifth session of the match. The opener is unbeaten on 93 and closing in on a memorable maiden Test century in only his second Test.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, meanwhile, has moved quickly to 41, with the pair putting on 76 runs for the third wicket -- already the second-highest partnership of the match after Tanzid and Mominul Haque's 102-run stand for the second wicket.
Australia, fielding their full-strength side, have used six bowlers, with Starc, Josh Hazlewood and captain Pat Cummins bowling the majority of the overs.
With Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das still to come, Bangladesh will be encouraged by the belief that the pitch is expected to become better for batting as the day progresses.
Tanzid, Shanto steer Tigers to strong position at lunch
Bangladesh will be delighted to head into lunch having lost only one wicket in the opening session of the second day of the first Test against Australia at Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Friday.
The Tigers reached 181 for two at the interval, trailing by just 17 runs, with opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim unbeaten on 74 off 144 balls. His composed innings includes six fours and a six.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, meanwhile, was unbeaten on 26 off 35 balls, having struck three boundaries. The Bangladesh captain adopted a proactive approach after Mominul Haque's dismissal for 49.
Tanzid and Shanto have added 43 runs for the third wicket, keeping Bangladesh firmly in control after Australia were bowled out for 198 on the opening day.
Mominul falls for 49 after 102-run stand with Tanzid
Mominul Haque was dismissed for 49 after edging Josh Hazlewood to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, ending a 102-run second-wicket partnership with Tanzid Hasan Tamim on the second day of the first Test against Australia at Marrara Stadium in Darwin on Friday.
Bangladesh are 138 for two in their first innings, trailing Australia by 60 runs in the crucial opening session.
Tanzid, playing only his second Test, brought up his maiden Test fifty off 102 balls, while the partnership with Mominul had taken Bangladesh from 36 for one.
He later brought up the 100-run partnership -- the first in the match so far -- by using his feet to drive Beau Webster uppishly through the off side for six, leaving Pat Cummins and teammates frustrated.
Bangladesh have now produced six century partnerships in Tests against Australia, four at home and two away. Their highest partnership in Down Under remains the 108-run second-wicket stand between Hannan Sarkar and Habibul Bashar in 2003, the last time the Tigers toured the country.
The Tanzid-Mominul partnership spanned 189 balls and helped Bangladesh negotiate a testing spell from Mitchell Starc, who repeatedly found the right channels and went past the outside edge, but the overnight batters maintained their composure in what could be pivotal session in the context of the match.
Earlier on Day 1, Bangladesh rode on Hasan Mahmud's career-best six-for to bowl out the hosts for 198 and then reached 96 for one at stumps.
