Bangladesh head coach Peter Butler has backed winger Ritu Porna Chakma ahead of Sunday’s crucial clash against India in the SAFF Women's Championship, calling her “one of the best wingers in South Asia.”

Speaking after a training session in Goa, Butler dismissed concerns over Ritu’s quiet performance against the Maldives, insisting that occasional off-days are part of a young player’s development.

“Ritu had an off day, and that happens. For me, she’s one of the best wingers in South Asia,” Butler said. “She’s young, has tremendous potential and great ability. It’s about bringing your A-game. I enjoy working with her.”

Bangladesh enter the match against India with confidence, having already secured a place in the semifinals. The team trained in a relaxed and positive atmosphere, with players upbeat during their final preparations in Goa.

The squad has also been encouraged by its recent record against India, having won their last two meetings 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. Despite India’s improvement since those encounters, Butler remains confident in his side’s ability to compete strongly.

“We have match-winners in the squad,” he said.

Ritu Porna is among the key players expected to make an impact, with the coaching staff continuing to place strong faith in her attacking abilities, including her pace, dribbling, and ability to take on defenders.

Bangladesh have also worked on multiple tactical plans ahead of the Group B decider, with the return of Monika Chakma expected to strengthen the squad further.

With both Bangladesh and India already through to the semifinals, Sunday’s match will decide who finishes top of the group and potentially avoids a tougher knockout path. For Ritu, it is another opportunity to respond on the big stage and underline her growing reputation in South Asian football.
