De Paul’s heartfelt tribute to grieving Messi
Rodrigo De Paul had a message for Lionel Messi on an emotional night for Inter Miami.
After scoring against Monterrey in the Leagues Cup on Saturday, the Argentine midfielder removed his shirt to reveal Messi’s iconic No. 10 jersey underneath, dedicating his goal to his close friend and captain.
The gesture came just hours after Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, died in Argentina at the age of 68.
Before kick-off, both teams observed a minute of silence in his honour, while Inter Miami supporters held up signs reading, “Stay strong, Leo” from the stands.
Then came De Paul’s moment.
In the 32nd minute, the midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box to put Miami ahead. He immediately removed his shirt, revealing the No. 10 beneath it — a touching tribute to Messi at a difficult time for the Argentine star.
The goal was more than just a celebration. It was a message of friendship and solidarity from one Argentine to another.
“Our hearts are with our captain, Leo, and the entire Messi family,” Inter Miami said before the match.
Messi was absent from the game as he travelled to Argentina following his father’s death. Without their captain, however, Miami could not hold on to De Paul’s lead, eventually losing 2-1 after goals from Hugo Cuypers and Diego Rossi.
