Guendouzi sparks ugly scenes as Fenerbahce seal Champions League return

Matteo Guendouzi was at the centre of chaotic scenes after Fenerbahce secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Lyon to qualify for the Champions League league phase for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

The Turkish side progressed 3-2 on aggregate after Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown scored in the second leg, with Malick Fofana's second-half strike proving only a consolation for the French club.

Tempers boiled over after the final whistle as players and staff from both teams became involved in clashes on the pitch and later in the tunnel.

The controversy intensified when Guendouzi was caught on camera shouting "Allez l'OM" -- a reference to Marseille -- towards a pitchside camera. Videos circulating on social media also appeared to show a person wearing Lyon kit confronting the France international as he headed towards the tunnel, triggering another melee involving players, staff and security personnel.

Speaking after the match, Guendouzi said he had been subjected to insults from Lyon supporters throughout the game.

"I felt disrespected by the fans. They were insulting my family," he said. "If we can't celebrate the way we want afterward, I find that disappointing."

Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal backed his midfielder, saying the squad stood firmly behind him during the post-match confrontation.
"As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about," Kartal said.

Fenerbahce will now join the 36-team Champions League league phase, with the draw set to take place in Monaco on Thursday.
