Rajshahi Stars begin continental campaign with 4-0 loss to East Bengal

Bangladesh Women's Football League champions Rajshahi Stars FC began their continental campaign with a heavy defeat, going down 4-0 to neighbouring East Bengal FC in their Group A opener in the preliminary stage of the AFC Women's Champions League in Malaysia on Monday.

The defeat leaves Golam Rabbani Choton's side with a difficult task in their bid to reach the 12-team final round, with only the group winners from each group advancing to the main stage.

Rajshahi Stars were on the back foot from the outset as East Bengal dominated proceedings and scored three times within the opening 38 minutes.

The Indian side took the lead in the ninth minute when Olivia Anokye converted a penalty despite goalkeeper Rupna Chakma's best efforts.

East Bengal doubled their advantage through Rimpa Haldar in the 26th minute, before adding a third just 12 minutes later.

Haldar floated a cross beyond Chakma in the 38th minute, with Sulanjana Raul reacting quickest at the back post to cut the ball back for Anokye, who made no mistake from close range to complete her brace.

Rajshahi regrouped after the break and offered greater resistance, but created little in attack. Their best chance came when Monika Chakma tested East Bengal goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi with a long-range effort, which she saved.

With the advantage firmly in hand, East Bengal remained patient and capitalised on a defensive error in the 72nd minute. Raul played Soumya Guguloth through, and the forward calmly slotted home to seal a comprehensive victory.

Rajshahi Stars will have an opportunity to bounce back when they face Sabah FA on August 20.
