Weather forecast: More heavy rain Monday, though intensity may decline, says BMD
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in six divisions tomorrow (Monday).
According to a BMD warning, heavy to very heavy rain may occur in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
The warning, signed by BMD meteorologist Hafizur Rahman, is valid for 24 hours from noon on Sunday.
According to the BMD, rainfall of 44 to 88 mm at a location is classified as heavy, while anything above 88 mm is considered very heavy rainfall.
“We have issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall tomorrow as well, although the intensity is expected to decrease,” said BMD meteorologist Dr Abul Kalam Mallik.
The persistent rainfall is being driven by an active monsoon, after initially being triggered by a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, rain has continued across various parts of the country, including the capital, since this morning, leaving several roads in Dhaka and Chattogram waterlogged.
Dhaka recorded 97mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 6:00am today. During the same period, Chattogram recorded 98mm, Cox’s Bazar 115mm, Patuakhali 132mm, Faridpur 106mm and Aricha 115mm.
Heavy rainfall across the country and in upstream areas has already triggered flooding in seven districts.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, water was flowing above the danger level at five monitoring stations along three rivers this morning. These are the Sangu in Bandarban and Chattogram, the Kushiyara in Sunamganj and Sylhet, and the Someshwari in Netrokona.
