Counterfeit driving licences
Do they not realise that the so-called drivers being ignorant of traffic regulations are only adding to the anarchy on the roads? Do they not know that by not taking action against the fake licensing rackets, they are putting the lives of commuters in jeopardy? There are certain rules and regulations that a vehicle owner has to follow not only to own a car but also to drive it or have it driven through the streets by a hired hand. Earlier we were concerned about unfit vehicles, but now the unskilled drivers behind the wheels are causing a graver concern.
How good are the provisions of law? Is it not ludicrous to impose a measly fine of Tk 200 on someone having been caught without a proper driving licence? We fail to understand why the penalties are yet to be made stringent commensurate with the culpability of the offence.
The dubious licences will have to be weeded out and their holders put through fresh tests of proficiency. Those who can cross the bar should be duly licensed. But basically the rackets behind the issuance of such licences will have to be eliminated by establishing a system of transparency and accountability across the transport sector. As part of the reform strategy, coordination between the BRTA and the police will have to be guaranteed at any cost.
