Saarc ministers' meet in Islamabad July 20-21

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan leaves for Islamabad tomorrow to attend the Inter-Summit Session of the Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Coperation) Council of Ministers July 20-21.

The session of the Saarc foreign ministers will review progress in implementation of the outcome of the 12th summit held in Islamabad last January.

The 12th summit adopted three landmark documents--Saarc Social Charter, South Asian Free Trade Agreement (Safta) and Additional Protocol to the Saarc Convention on Terrorism.

It also endorsed the report of the Independent South Asian Commission on Poverty Alleviation (ISACPA) which elaborates a comprehensive Saarc agenda on poverty.

The Saarc foreign ministers in Islamabad will consider issues relating to poverty alleviation and reports of Saarc ministerial level meetings on environment and communication

They will discuss matters relating to the 13th Summit to be held in Dhaka in January 2005.

The Council of Ministers meeting will be preceded by the 30th session of Saarc Standing Committee comprising the foreign secretaries July 18-19 and the 25th session of the Saarc Programming Committee July 16-17. Foreign Secretary Shamser Mobin Chowdhury will attend the meeting of the standing committee.
