A landmark verdict

From the list of the convicts it appears that the perpetrators of this heinous crime cut across party lines, although, as apparent from the verdict, the mastermind belongs to the ruling party. That such a verdict has come, in spite of the political clout of the convicts, makes it a momentous one.

It will, we hope, bring some solace to the members of the family of the late lamented politician who was liked by his constituency across party affiliations, although nothing can recompense the tragic loss that the family members will carry in their hearts all their lives. The slain leader's family members have also expressed their satisfaction with the verdict.

The verdict negates the knee-jerk remarks that were made very soon after the murder that attributed it to an intraparty feud. It will, we hope, deter those that rush to judgement no sooner than such an act is committed. We note with satisfaction that such comments have not in any way influenced the course of the investigation.

What the people would like to see now is that the verdict is implemented and also that all the absconding convicts are apprehended without delay and brought to justice.

We can take comfort in the fact that a case of this magnitude has been concluded with speed, thanks to the Speedy Tribunal. We would like to hope that this will be an example for the future and that all such cases are handled with the same degree of promptitude so that justice can be meted out without delay?
