A great day to observe

His raising the people of Arabia from the depths of despair could have itself earned him a permanent place in the halls of fame as a social reformer. But he was much more than that, a religious teacher par excellence who preached by revelation the rationale and glory of monotheism.

In his lifetime, he had the satisfaction of seeing Islam the messages of peace, harmony, human composition spread well beyond Mecca and Medina, the combined birth place of the religion; the rapidity with which Islam became a world religion is an eternal tribute to his greatness.

At a time when harmony, peaceful coexistence and mutual tolerance between religions, communities and ethnic entities are much-coveted goals, against the backdrop of terrorist attack of 9/11 and the events that followed it, the messages of the Prophet of Islam (Peace Be Upon Him) ring out with great relevance to the contemporary world.

He was a votary of unquenchable thirst for knowledge. In his personal life, he would not preach anything that he did not himself practise.

His emphasis on equality of man, egalitarian principles, respect for women and elderly and tolerance of others' views is something that can serve as a beacon of light for a benign conduct of human affairs in today's context.
