Dhaka at the Palais / A girl and her horse trudge through the Short Film Corner

22 May 2026, 20:30 PM
By the time the ‘happy hour’ sizzled down, I had talked to a dozen filmmakers from all over the world who were hoping to get their films onto the main stages of the upcoming Berlinale, TIFF, and Venice Film Festivals. Mithun, by that time, had unofficially confirmed that he had found a willing distributor. If that is true, Cannes served as the first proper documentation of this promising film.

Dhaka at the Palais / Addressing the ‘Elephants in the Fog’ and how we treat our ‘others’

20 May 2026, 20:48 PM
“Elephants in the Fog” serves as a testament to how Nepal’s legal fight has historically leaned toward a broader human rights framework, granting an "others" category on citizenship documents based on self-identification.

Dhaka at the Palais / Cate Blanchett’s DFF, its Bangladesh connection, and a fleeting opportunity

19 May 2026, 12:26 PM
When I walked into the Salle de Conférence de Presse for the Displaced Filmmakers Fund (DFF), admittedly a bit late after a screening, one thing instantly came to mind: Rithy Panh, Annemarie Jacir, Mohammed Amer, Akuol de Mabior, and Bao Nguyen are incredibly talented directors of the highest calibre. However, I wondered whether the fund could also be used to amplify voices that would otherwise have no way of being heard. I will circle back to this point.

Tribute / She was the best of us

16 May 2026, 13:20 PM
However, humor was not all she was—she was also the kindest and most giving person you could meet. She was the type who would send you voice messages to praise and encourage you, even if you had just met. If she perceived you to be talented in any way, she would go above and beyond to encourage you to pursue your craft.

This Eid-Ul-Adha, Raihan Rafi directorial “Poran” is up against the BDT 100 crore mammoth production, Ananta Jalil’s “Din: The Day”. While both films have gathered considerable hype ahead of release, the difference in budget and halls released in means that “Poran” will only have to do a fraction of the business to be deemed “successful”.

Coke Studio Bangla Concert: The night music won against pessimism

Let us address the elephant in the room first: Coke Studio Bangla is obviously an elaborate advert for Coca Cola. It does not take a genius to come to that conclusion, the enormous Coca Cola logo on top of the stage at Army Stadium yesterday should be enough of a ‘hint’. That being said, what the platform has done to re-ignite interest in our local scene is admirable, only exemplified by thousands of people showing up in droves in Bangladesh Army Stadium yesterday, despite an entire day of incessant rain.
