Rajshahi Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Jawadul Haque was allegedly forced to sign a resignation letter today after a group of people stormed his office.

The incident occurred while the VC was attending a virtual meeting with health ministry officials about ongoing construction projects, RMU Deputy Registrar Md Mofakkharul Islam said.

The deputy registrar said a group of 20-50 people stormed into the VC’s office around 12:00pm and ordered him to sign the resignation letter "without reading it".

VC’s personal secretary Nazmul Hossain was assaulted when he intervened, Mofakkharul said.

The group then allegedly forced Nazmul to sign a separate resignation letter despite his protest that he was a regular employee.

The deputy registrar said the group took both resignation letters, along with the VC’s mobile phone and laptop.

University officials later found that CCTV equipment had been removed and electricity, internet and other communication services had been disconnected. Several rooms had also been locked, disrupting regular activities.

Mofakkharul added that some members of the group appeared to have taken part in an earlier protest demanding the VC’s resignation.

Campus sources said the protest came amid allegations of irregularities in university appointments and other activities. The allegations were previously denied by the VC.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Prof Md Jawadul Haque said some of those who entered his office appeared to be linked to local contractors, while others were outsiders allegedly backed by political groups.

He said they shouted slogans calling him an “Awami League collaborator” and accused him of awarding university contracts to firms from Dhaka instead of local contractors.

“At one point, they forcibly obtained my signature on a resignation letter, drove me out of my office and locked the office,” said the VC.

He said he had already informed the local administration about the incident and filed an online general diary.

“I have also informed local BNP leaders, and they assured me that they would identify those involved and take action against them,” he added.
