The High Court yesterday upheld a lower court verdict that sentenced a woman to life term imprisonment and her boyfriend to death for killing her four-year-old son Shihabur Rahman Payel in Narsingdi over their extramarital affairs.

Son of Sohrab Hossain Bhuiyan Mamun, an expatriate in Singapore, and Afroja Sultana Nupur of Pandit Para in Palash upazila of the district, Payel was killed following extramarital affairs between Nupur and Gazi Abdus Salam alias Uzzal of the same area, according to the prosecution.

Quoting confessional statements of Nupur before the lower court, Assistant Attorney General Md Aminur Rahman Chowdhury Tiku told The Daily Star that she and Uzzal agreed that she would marry Uzzal after he would first take up her son, Payel, for his bringing up.

On December 6, 2006 as per their decision Nupur handed over Payel to Uzzal and the following day he told her that he strangled Payel, said AAG Tiku quoting the statement.

Payel's body was recovered near Mamun's house on December 9, 2006. The victim's uncle later filed a murder case.

The Narsingdi court sentenced Uzzal to death and Nupur to life imprisonment on September 1, 2009.

The convicts, who are now in jail, then filed separate appeals with the HC challenging the lower court verdict.
